The Biggest Loser

Tonight a new season of The Biggest Loser airs on NBC. I would guess this is my fourth or fifth dance with this inspirational show. I tried to lose weight three years in a row before becoming educated, yes actually educated by television, and I’m looking forward to some more motivation this evening @ 7 p.m. CST. As one of the stars/trainers, Jillian Michaels, put it, “Biggest Loser is more than a reality show, it’s a movement.”

Before I would aggressively exercise, but blindly, never considering the other half of healthy living – what food I was putting into my body. I quickly learned what calories were and how many I should be eating. I’ve now boiled this down to an easy mantra, “do the math, lose the weight.” Knowing really is half the battle.

To get geared up for this premiere event I’m heading to the gym to burn around 450 calories. Then it’s off to the grocery store, where I will actually be reading the product labels. I think I’ll prep my classic low calorie eggplant parmesan for supper this evening. Wow, food that’s healthy and delicious. Yes people, it does exist.

  1. I really enjoyed this post. Getting to know exactly what your eating is half the battle! And I agree, The Biggesst Loser is such a great show and i’m so so so excited to watch it tonight! I have my box of kleenex ready and everything. Good plan working out before you watch, I’m going to work out while watching it. Good luck on your journey!!

  2. My son suggested that I watch this series. He felt I would enjoy the health tips that were presented during the show. After watching the first hour of the season premier, I was a bit discouraged when they sent two groups home. These were the ones that needed the most help (I know, this is a contest). I was relieved to find out they would have the support of the personal trainers and would discover how they were progressing after a month. It was also discouraging to see one member of the team below the yellow line return home. I was sad to see those twins separated. It was a nice touch to let us know James had lost 100 pounds after a month. I am now anxious to see the next episode. (PS I lost between 25 and 30 pounds from January, 2009, through June, 2009. Currently, maintaining which is a difficult task.)

  3. I have now finished the second episode. it is wonderful being able to delay the veiwing with a dvr. The Biggest Loser does a lot of repetition through out the 2 hours. The one thing that I did not like about this episode was the red female’s attitude after they earned immunity from one of their team members going home this week. It sounds like she is more interested in winning the money than it changing to a healthy lifestyle. We all know that the healthy lifestyle is much more valuable than winning the money. I thought it was funny that she gained a pound. Hope the red team is the loser in the 3rd week and the wife gets sent home. I guess a bad attitude on my part.

  4. Well, here is hoping the gal from the red team gets eliminated tonight. She certainly doesn’t seem to be pursuing a weight loss but the winning of the prize.

  5. Yes I agree. So frustrating! At least if you’re going to throw a weigh in lose SOME weight, just not like 10 pounds. Don’t GAIN! And don’t do it twice in a row!!!

  6. I was a bit disappointed to see one of the green team sent home although I felt the daughter was extremely homesick. If your husband is going to leave for Afghanistan before the end of the show, seeing him is probably more important than staying at the ranch. I hope the mother is able to come around and get along with the other contestants. Both did seem to have a chip on their shoulders. I am still hoping to see the red team below the yellow line. Shame on me. I also wondered about the commercial which Jillian said they needed to store fresh fruit and vegetables in Ziplock bags. Come on. Now the ad with the chewing gum seemed logical. Well, here is to the next episodes. (Wonder what NBC will do with this during the Olympics?)

  7. Well, today is my 63rd birthday. Celebrated by eating a scone for breakfast followed by a sushi bar at lunch. Whoa, can’t believe the calories I put away. I am not going to want to get on the scales Monday morning. That is what will get me back on the band wagon, though. Well, back to the Biggest Loser. It is getting hard to see anybody go home. I truly believe that everybody remaining is sincere about changing their lifestyles. I couldn’t believe they could pull those semis. The prize of one year’s groceries was awesome. Having the contestants work a 40 hour week was a great idea. They certainly won’t be working out 6 hours a day when this is all over. I will be anxious to see how things go next week.
